Coinbase Institutional builds and operates products for institutional customers, including Coinbase Prime, Advanced Trade, custody, and other services that support trading, staking, governance, custody, and API integrations. The Institutional Prime Trading, Derivatives team owns the end-to-end platform powering listed futures trading and related infrastructure.

Role summary

We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to improve observability, reliability, and operational excellence across our institutional trading and derivatives platform. You will build automation, performance tune cloud deployments, reduce toil, mentor engineers, and help make reliability a core engineering value. This role participates in an on-call rotation and drives design and operational practices that increase system safety, scale, and clarity.

Key responsibilities

• Define, measure, and improve reliability and observability metrics for critical systems.
• Build automation to eliminate manual operational tasks and reduce toil.
• Performance tune and optimize cloud deployments using infrastructure tools and container platforms.
• Collaborate with product teams to reduce service disruptions and automate incident response workflows.
• Proactively identify reliability gaps across the stack, design software solutions, and implement improvements.
• Educate, mentor, and hold engineering peers accountable for reliability best practices.
• Write high quality, well tested code to meet production needs and enable operability.
• Debug complex technical problems, improving systems to be easier to deploy, operate, and diagnose.
• Review feature designs for cross-cutting impact and take ownership for security, safety, and operational integrity.
• Build pipelines and integrations with third party vendors as needed.
• Participate in an on-call support rotation for timely incident resolution.

What we look for

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of building, scaling, and maintaining production services.
• Strong system design and coding skills, with experience composing service oriented architectures.
• Experience with observability, debugging, and performance tuning at scale.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, and a bias toward open and transparent culture.
• Ability to work with engineers across levels and to exercise critical thinking under pressure.
• Willingness to dive into any layer of the stack to understand, debug, and improve systems.
• On-call availability to resolve urgent incidents outside regular hours.

Nice to have

• Experience designing and building high throughput, low latency systems.
• Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools such as Kibana or Datadog.
• Experience with Ruby, Go, and Terraform.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or other cloud platforms.
• Experience working in highly regulated environments.
• Experience writing company facing blog posts or training materials.
• Crypto-forward experience, including onchain interactions and blockchain familiarity.

Role details

Job ID: GISRE05US. Work model: Coinbase is remote-first but not remote-only; in-person participation at offsites and events is expected and supported. This role may require coordination with distributed teams and participation in operational events.

Compensation

Pay Range: $140,250 - $165,000 USD, depending on work location. Full time offers may include target bonus, target equity, and benefits such as medical, dental, vision, and retirement plans based on jurisdiction.
