About Automattic
Automattic builds and maintains industry-leading products that democratize publishing, commerce, and messaging. We are a fully distributed team working on WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, Jetpack, and other open source projects. Our engineering culture values shipping often, open collaboration, and building high quality solutions that scale to millions of users.
Role overview
We are hiring experienced engineers worldwide to contribute across product areas, from backend performance and infrastructure to frontend experiences and e-commerce. As an Experienced Software Engineer you will design and implement production systems, participate in architecture and design discussions, and help improve operational practices. - Design and implement reliable, maintainable code across the stack, using languages and frameworks aligned with the product area.
- Ship changes frequently through peer code review and continuous integration, ensuring high quality and measurable outcomes.
- Debug, profile, and optimize systems for performance and scale, addressing production incidents and root causes.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to translate product goals into shipped features.
- Contribute to open source projects and engage with the broader WordPress community, including guest speaking or volunteering at WordCamps where appropriate.
What we look for
- Proven production experience across multiple programming languages, frameworks, or platforms; familiarity with PHP and JavaScript is valuable.
- Strong problem solving skills and an attention to detail when debugging complex issues or making architectural tradeoffs.
- Experience working at scale, either on backend performance, frontend complexity, or distributed systems.
- Comfort working remotely and asynchronously, with the ability to travel 3-4 weeks per year for team meetups.
- A collaborative mindset and desire to learn and mentor others; you enjoy sharing knowledge and improving team practices.
Nice to have
- Experience with Gutenberg, WooCommerce, or e-commerce platforms.
- Familiarity with AI-driven development workflows or contributions to open source projects.
- Background in performance engineering, scalable backend systems, or multi-tenant architectures.
Work model and expectations
This role is fully remote and accepts applicants worldwide. Teams coordinate asynchronously and occasionally gather in person for meetups and retreats. You should be comfortable working across time zones and participating in distributed collaboration.
Compensation
Salary range: $70,000 - $170,000 USD, paid in local currency when applicable. Actual offers reflect experience, location, and potential impact. Automattic offers transparent compensation philosophy and aims to provide straightforward base pay with country-specific benefits.
Benefits and perks
