Job Description

Senior Fullstack Engineer

Department: Engineering

About Atticus

At any given time, 16 million Americans face a crisis that requires urgent legal or government assistance. Atticus makes it easy for people with disabilities, victims of accidents, misconduct, or violence to get life-changing aid and compensation. Over the last six years we have become a leading platform connecting people in need with government benefits and legal support. To date we have helped more than 110,000 people, earned over 13,000 five-star reviews, and secured more than $4 billion in aid for clients. We have raised over $100 million from top VCs including Fika, Forerunner, GV (Google Ventures), and True Ventures, and we closed our Series C round in April 2025. We grew from 89 to over 151 team members last year, and we expect continued growth in 2025.

Atticus operates in an industry dominated by outdated technology. While competitors rely on large call centers, antiquated CRMs, and paper checks, our product and engineering teams power a modern platform that delivers better outcomes for clients and partner lawyers. As a mission-driven, VC-backed B Corporation, our engineering work directly helps people in crisis.

The Job

We are hiring Software Engineers who will work across front-end and back-end systems and partner with every department at Atticus to expand our platform. You will design, build, and operate web applications with a focus on performance, modularity, extensibility, and reliability. This role gives you an opportunity to join a high-growth startup with strong traction, meaningful funding, and the chance to shape company culture while helping clients in urgent need.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and operate Atticus web applications that emphasize performance, modularity, extensibility, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with product to evaluate and refine product details and acceptance criteria.
  • Architect, design, write, review, and test code in a collaborative environment with other software engineers.
  • Evaluate storage technologies and methodologies with scalability and performance in mind.
  • Leverage teammates as multipliers to build excellent products and services.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience writing idiomatic JavaScript, Golang, Java, Python, Scala, or Ruby.
  • Experience and passion for building performant React applications.
  • Fluent in CSS and HTML, and skilled at building around browser limitations.
  • Comfort working with UI and UX experts to build compelling user experiences.
  • Experience building modern, resilient, operationally sane fullstack systems following industry standards (HTTP REST, GraphQL, stream processing, big data).
  • Experience mentoring and teaching backend system best practices and architecture.
  • Ability to work with product to clarify and translate requirements for engineering teams.
  • Proficiency with a modern version-control system for source code (Git, Mercurial, GitHub, BitBucket).
  • Commitment to linting and testing code, and sound judgment in choosing frameworks and technologies.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing systems (GCP, AWS, etc.) and SaaS concepts.
  • Experience leveraging continuous integration systems (CircleCI, Bamboo, Jenkins, TravisCI) and building monitoring and alerting for production systems.
  • Willingness and ability to deploy, troubleshoot, and maintain systems in production and staging environments.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Docker, CircleCI, Git, Golang, or Java.
  • Experience with GraphQL, GraphQL Federation, REST APIs, and supporting network protocols.
  • Experience with a distributed SQL platform such as CockroachDB or Google Spanner.
  • Experience with Hadoop, MapReduce, or other big data systems.
  • Ability to build a great Webpack configuration.

Diversity and Impact

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you come from a background underrepresented in tech, we would love to meet you. This is a rare opportunity to join a startup with strong traction and many happy customers while making a direct social impact.

Salary and Benefits

We offer competitive pay, equity, and generous benefits. We anticipate a base salary band for this role between $170,000 and $200,000, in addition to equity and benefits. The final offer will depend on experience, skills, and internal equity.

Benefits include:

  • Medical and dental insurance with 100% of employee premiums covered (Health Insurance).
  • 15 vacation days plus approximately 19 paid holidays each year, including two weeks at the end of the year.
  • Free OneMedical membership (Wellness Programs).
  • $600 per year reimbursable stipend for internet service (Home Office Stipend).
  • $1,000 per year reimbursable stipend for education and training outside of work (Learning Budget).
  • Up to $1,200 per year student loan repayment assistance.
  • 401(k) and optional HSA/FSA (401(k) / Retirement Plans).
  • Equity in the company (Equity/Stock Options).
  • Humble, thoughtful, smart, fun colleagues and company retreats and offsites (Company Retreats).

Location and Remote Policy

This job is fully remote. Live wherever, work remotely, and travel to Los Angeles on the company dime as needed to meet colleagues - approximately quarterly to yearly. Atticus is committed to flexibility and thoughtful in-person gatherings like retreats and offsites.
