About BackWPup and group.one
BackWPup is a widely used WordPress backup plugin trusted by over 600,000 sites. It sits within WP Media and the wider group.one family, a leading European digital services organization that builds hosting, performance, and security products for WordPress users. The team is fully remote and values flexible schedules, asynchronous collaboration, and shipping high quality products that help small businesses and creators succeed online.
Role overview
We are looking for a Product Manager to own BackWPup, lead the product roadmap, and ship the next generation of backup and hosting features that improve reliability, onboarding, and monetization. This is a hands-on role where you will lead a small cross-functional team and drive product-led growth (PLG) initiatives that increase adoption and customer lifetime value.
Key responsibilities
- Collaborate with product leaders and stakeholders to define the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for BackWPup.
- Own the full product lifecycle from discovery to launch, with a strong focus on data-driven decisions and high quality releases.
- Partner with engineering, design, marketing, and support teams to deliver product-led growth outcomes such as improved onboarding, self-service conversion, and retention.
- Conduct user research, gather feedback from the WordPress community, and analyze usage data to inform product decisions.
- Build and run experiments, measure results with analytics tools, and iterate quickly to improve acquisition and feature adoption.
- Manage experiments and satellite plugins like Adminimize and Search & Replace when relevant to product objectives.
- Share best practices across the product organization and help improve release processes in a stability-sensitive sector.
Requirements
- 3–6 years of product experience, including time as the lead PM for a meaningful product area.
- Experience with WordPress or hosting-related products is highly desirable.
- Proven track record managing technical projects from concept to launch, with a strong bias for shipping and iteration.
- Familiarity with PLG strategies such as self-service onboarding, free-to-paid conversion, and product analytics.
- Customer empathy and ability to translate user problems into focused product work.
- Comfort working autonomously in a remote environment and collaborating across distributed teams.
- Data-driven mindset and familiarity with tools like Mixpanel, HubSpot, Jira, Figma, or similar analytics and product platforms.
- Located in, or able to work hours aligned with, time zones between GMT+3 and GMT-5 is preferred to allow synchronous collaboration.
Nice to have
- Technical background or early career as an engineer.
- Experience with acquisition, onboarding, monetization, and retention for consumer or SMB products.
- Active involvement in the WordPress community, speaking at WordCamps or contributing to plugins.
Working model
This role is fully remote. The team favors flexible schedules and asynchronous communication. Occasional in-person gatherings are organized annually and team members are encouraged to participate when possible.
Compensation
Salary range: $120,000 - $190,000 USD. Automattic/group.one pay in local currency where applicable and final offers reflect experience, location, and potential impact.
Perks and benefits
- Budget for home office setup and monthly remote-work reimbursement.
- Monthly remote-work expense budget and home office support.
- Annual company coworking and retreat week with the team.
- Learning and development budget to support continuous growth.
- Open vacation policy and flexible working hours, plus paid parental leave and sabbatical opportunities.
Why join
You will lead a high potential, early-stage product with strong traction and the opportunity to shape product market fit for small businesses globally. Join a passionate, fully remote team and help make the WordPress ecosystem safer and more reliable for site owners.
How to apply
Apply via the job page. Include a resume and a short explanation of why you are a fit for the role, plus examples of product work if available. Be prepared to discuss product decisions you have led and your approach to PLG experiments.
