Counsel / Senior Counsel at Atticus
Job Description
About Atticus
At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from the legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives, but most never get it. Atticus makes it easy for sick or injured people in crisis to get life-changing aid. Over the last six years we have become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits, and we also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence obtain insurance compensation. So far we have helped thousands access over $4B in aid, supported more than 110,000 people, and earned 13,000+ five-star reviews. We have raised over $100 million from top VC firms including Fika, Forerunner, GV (Google Ventures), and True Ventures, and we closed our Series C round in April 2025. Our team grew from 89 to over 151 last year, and we expect further growth in 2025.
The Job
We are hiring a lawyer to join as a founding member of our in-house Legal team, working closely with the General Counsel. You will steer high-level legal strategy, advise leaders across the company on day-to-day and long-term legal matters, and help define the systems and culture of Legal at a high-growth startup operating in a regulated space. This role offers exposure to a wide range of corporate and product issues, and a clear path to growing into an executive legal role.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise company leadership on legal strategy across product, operations, and corporate matters.
- Provide practical, principled legal guidance on regulatory and compliance matters relevant to our business model.
- Support areas including data privacy, intellectual property, venture financings, corporate governance, and industry-specific regulatory concerns.
- Work cross-functionally with product, engineering, operations, and other teams to identify legal risk and enable safe, scalable growth.
- Help design and implement legal processes, playbooks, and policies that scale with the company.
- Partner with external counsel as needed and manage outside legal spend and priorities.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of relevant legal experience at a top law firm or as in-house counsel.
- Member in good standing of at least one US state bar.
- Strong business instincts, resourcefulness, and the ability to thrive in a scrappy, fast-moving startup environment.
- Comfort with ambiguity and experience delivering practical legal solutions under evolving constraints.
- Excellent legal writing and analytical skills, combined with a demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people.
Bonus / Nice-to-Have
- Substantial experience with US privacy and data protection laws.
- Prior in-house experience managing a broad docket at a high-growth technology company.
- Experience with corporate governance or advising senior leadership and boards.
Culture and Opportunity
This is a rare opportunity to join a mission-driven, well-funded startup that still offers the chance to have outsized impact and shape company culture. We are a certified B Corporation tackling a critical social problem, and your work here will directly affect thousands of people in need.
Salary and Benefits
We offer competitive pay, including equity, and generous benefits. We anticipate the base salary for this role will be between $140,000 and $175,000, in addition to equity and benefits. Final compensation will depend on experience, skills, and internal equity. Benefits include:
- Medical and dental insurance with 100% of employee premiums covered.
- 15 vacation days and approximately 19 paid holidays each year, including two weeks at the end of the year.
- Free membership to OneMedical.
- $50 per month internet stipend.
- $1,000 reimbursable stipend for education and training outside of work.
- Up to $1,200 per year student loan repayment assistance.
- 401(k) and optional HSA/FSA.
- Equity participation.
- Humble, thoughtful, smart, fun colleagues and thoughtfully planned retreats and offsites.
Location and Work Style
This job is fully remote. We are committed to flexibility - work remotely from where you live, and travel to Los Angeles on the company dime as needed to meet colleagues, typically somewhere between quarterly and yearly. We value in-person gatherings for culture building and plan retreats and offsites thoughtfully.
Diversity and Inclusion
We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you are from a background underrepresented in tech, we would love to meet you. Atticus is a certified B Corporation, and our mission to help people in need drives everything we do.
